Why Reading Books is Important

As a school, we are promoting reading for pleasure and as such our students are reading for 20 minutes daily through our Drop Everything and Read programme.

We want to encourage students to challenge themselves to read books that they would not normally read. We have compiled a suggested reading list which contains over 100 books of various genres which are suitable for secondary school aged students. This list includes classic books, modern bestsellers and various genres such as sporting biographies, fantasy and music. Please take some time to encourage your child to move away from his / her usual genre of book. Reading a wide variety of genres will help your child to widen his / her vocabulary and as such this will be a greater challenge. Reading widely, not just frequently has been proven to significantly improve children's progress at school.
