Welcome from Mr Walker
I am delighted to be writing to you as the new Headteacher of St Bernadette Catholic Secondary School at the beginning of this academic year. I feel extremely honoured and humbled to have been entrusted with continuing the success that St Bernadette has achieved under Mrs McLaughlin, the outgoing Headteacher. I have been pleased to see today the excellent attitudes to school and high standards of school uniform that our young people have returned with after the summer break.
As a former student and as Deputy Headteacher of St Bernadette School for the last eight years I feel particularly pleased to have been appointed to this position and well placed to lead the school in its future development. As this is such an important position in leading our community of learning and faith I think it is important you know a little more of my background. Following studying at St Bernadette for Secondary School, I went onto St Brendan’s Sixth Form College, followed by Cardiff and Bristol University. I enjoy reading, cycling, playing tennis and used to also play rugby and football, I now enjoy watching these latter sports from a safe distance!
As the new Headteacher at St Bernadette it is my main job to make sure that your children grow as contented young people and achieve to the best of their God given talent. I am determined that the young people at St Bernadette strive to be the very best that they can be and that we will give them every opportunity to do just that. As such I have very high standards, standards that encourage students to be successful scholars, be resilient and reach their academic potential but also as positive role models in society whom have excellent behaviour.
The past two years have been a very difficult time for our society as a whole. I am a husband and father to three children myself and I have seen in a personal sense the way that the pandemic has impacted upon their lives. Please rest assured that through our caring Catholic ethos, and our focus on Gospel Values, we will endeavour to act as a source of stability, structure and joy in your child’s life as society returns to a new normal. It is my hope that we do not simply move to the strong position that the school was in prior to the pandemic but look to move beyond this. We will look to create opportunities for your child to flourish outside of the classroom and ensure that they are nurtured in their development as a unique individual. It is my hope that as we begin to move towards some sort of normality we will be able to grow these opportunities.
It will remain our whole school aim to strive for excellence in all that your child does, help them to leave us having fulfilled their potential and ready as a well-rounded person for the next stage of their journey through life.
In my experience strong relationships between parents/carers, teachers and students help to build a successful school. I am very much looking forward to working with you and watching the students at St Bernadette grow in faith, strive for academic excellence and develop as well rounded people. I wish to thank you in advance for your support of all members of the St Bernadette staff as the school begins this exciting new chapter in its development.
